‘Genius’ Renewed By Nat Geo, Season 3 Subject Revealed – Upfront

National Geographic has renewed scripted anthology series Genius for a third season and has revealed that iconic author Mary Shelley, best known for her Gothic novel Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, will be its subject. The network made the announcement at the conclusion of its upfront Wednesday in New York City.

Mary Shelley will follow brilliant physicist Albert Einstein, who was at the center of Season 1, and famous artist Pablo Picasso, who was the subject of Season 2. Like with the previous seasons, Nat Geo and Fox 21 Television Studios and Imagine Television are expected to go after big names for the lead — Geoffrey Rush played Einstein, and Antonio Banderas portrayed Picasso. The Season 3 renewal comes a week ahead of the April 24 premiere of Genius: Picasso.

“Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein left an indelible mark on generations of imaginations,” said Carolyn Bernstein, EVP, global development and production for National Geographic Global Networks. ” Equally inspiring is the story of Shelley’s relentless innovation, coupled with her desire to live on her own unconventional terms despite immense societal and cultural obstacles.”

Showrunner, executive producer and writer Ken Biller will be back in the same role next season. Also returning are executive producers Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Francie Calfo of Imagine TV, with the company’s Anna Culp serving as producer. Gigi Pritzker and Rachel Shane are executive producers for MWM Studios and Sam Sokolow and Jeff Cooney are executive producers for EUE/Sokolow. Filming is expected to begin later this year.

“Mary Shelley has inspired countless filmmakers with her tale of the wretch brought to life by science gone wrong, but very few have fully captured her insightful reflections on society in the myth she left behind,” said executive producer Ron Howard. “Few know of her struggles due to gender inequities, her additional writings, her influence on other historically significant individuals and society at large. Showcasing someone like Mary Shelley and her amazing intellect, compassion and fortitude is exactly what this series is for.”

Finding a highly accomplished woman to be the subject of Genius had been important for Nat Geo and the series’ producers. There was talk about a female protagonist for Season 2 before Picasso was ultimately selected. I hear everyone involved doubled their efforts on getting a woman-centered third season together. (Scientist Marie Curie would’ve been an obvious choice but she was featured prominently in Season 1 because of her interactions with Einstein.)

“The choice of Mary Shelley as the subject of our third season speaks to the incredible depth of the franchise.,” said Bert Salke, president of Fox 21 Television Studios.  “How fitting at this moment in time to pivot to one of the many female geniuses in human history, and Mary’s story is both stranger than fiction and incredibly dramatic.”

Per Nat Geo: A brilliant thinker, radical intellectual and proto-feminist, Mary Shelley (1797-1851) brought to life one of the most enduring stories of the modern age while still a teenager. Frankenstein; or the Modern Prometheus is a cautionary tale of unchecked scientific ambition and a sophisticated meditation on social institutions, personal freedom and compassion that has captured imaginations and continues to be relevant since it was first published 200 years ago. Shelley masterfully invented the Science Fiction/Horror genre with her tale of a creature brought to life, subsequently going on to create the Post-Apocalyptic genre with her later novel, The Last Man.

An intellectual prodigy who was inspired from an early age by the writing of her unconventional mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, Shelley was determined to prove that women were the intellectual and creative equals of men. One of few women to support herself as an author during the early 18th century, Shelley wrote short stories, reviews, travelogues, and made prolific contributions to the world’s first encyclopedia, she also wrote six novels. Shelley’s inner circle included countless literary and scientific luminaries of the day, including Lord Byron, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Mary and Charles Lamb, Humphry Davy and Leigh Hunt.

Shelley met the love of her life, Romantic poet, amateur scientist and still-married Percy Bysshe Shelley, at the age of 16. After losing her virginity to Shelley at her mother’s gravesite, the pair eloped and were cast out by her father, the radical intellectual William Godwin. Shelley was to endure a lifetime of tragic misfortune, watching three of her four children die, losing multiple friends and family members to suicide, and outliving her husband, who drowned at sea. In true gothic style, Shelley elected to keep her late husband’s heart after his death.

Shelley’s writing was heavily influenced by the great scientific innovation and experimentation of the early 19th century. Scientists like Luigi Galvani, Giovanni Aldini and Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of Charles, figured prominently in her life. The story of Frankenstein was inspired in part by one of the most important scientific theories of the time, Galvanism, the study of the effect of electricity on the dead bodies of animals and humans.

Mary Shelley spent the last few years of her life being looked after by her only surviving child, Percy Florence Shelley, before dying of a brain tumor at the age of 53.

The first season of Genius, starring Geoffrey Rush as Albert Einstein, was Nat Geo’s best performing new series launch ever, drawing more than 45 million viewers worldwide. The series earned ten Emmy nominations, a Golden Globe nomination and SAG Award nomination

Season 2, Genius: Picasso, starring Antonio Banderas as Pablo Picasso, premieres Tuesday, April 24 at 9 PM on Nat Geo.

‘The Gifted’ Renewed For Season 2 By Fox – TCA

‘The Gifted’ Renewed For Season 2 By Fox – TCA

Ahead of its upcoming Season 1 finale, Fox has renewed The Gifted, its family adventure series set in Marvel’s X-Men universe, for a second season. The announcement was made during Fox’s portion of the winter TCA press tour.

The renewal was fully expected. Because The Gifted is designed for limited runs, there was no rush to give the series an early pickup. Still, after talk started about a pending Disney-Fox deal that includes The Gifted producer 20th Century Fox TV, some wondered whether the Marvel property will remain on the Fox broadcast network. But with the acquisition not projected to close for at least a year, FBC appears the only option for the show for next fall.

The Gifted has been a solid ratings performer for the network. Ranking as the No. 3 new drama of the 2017-2018 season, The Gifted is averaging a 2.0/7 in Live + 7, and is up 18% over the year-ago time period. The series averages 8.3 million Total Viewers across platforms, representing a +146% lift from its Live + Same Day delivery. It joins fellow new sci-fi Fox drama The Orville, which also has been renewed for a second season.

The Gifted will wrap its freshman season with a two-hour finale on Monday, January 15 at 8 PM. In it, Dr. Campbell (guest star Garret Dillahunt) attends the Humanity Today summit, attempting to take the Hound program national, while some of the team at Mutant HQ go on a dangerous mission to stop his efforts. Then, the Mutant HQ comes under attack. With everything to lose, alliances shift and relationships are put to the test.

The series from writer Matt Nix focuses on a suburban couple (Stephen Moyer, Amy Acker) whose ordinary lives are rocked by the sudden discovery that their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive. Natalie Alyn Lind and Percy Hynes White also star.

The Gifted is produced by 20th Century Fox Television in association with Marvel Television.

‘Salvation’ Summer Drama Series Renewed For Season 2 By CBS

‘Salvation’ Summer Drama Series Renewed For Season 2 By CBS

CBS has given a 13-episode second-season pickup to suspense thriller Salvation to air in summer 2018. There is no decision yet on CBS’ other summer drama series, Zoo.

Salvation, which had a decent freshman performance by summer ratings standards and is owned by CBS, centers on Liam Cole, an MIT grad student, and Darius Tanz, a tech superstar, who bring Pentagon official Grace Barrows a staggering discovery – that an asteroid is just months away from colliding with Earth. Now with the added threat of nuclear war on the horizon, they work together with Secretary of Defense Harris Edwards to find a way to divert the asteroid, stop the war and save humanity before time runs out.

The series stars Santiago Cabrera, Jennifer Finnigan, Charlie Rowe, Jacqueline Byers, Rachel Drance and Ian Anthony Dale. Liz Kruger, Craig Shapiro, Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Stuart Gillard and Peter Lenkov are executive producers for CBS Television Studios in association with Secret Hideout.

CBS Orders ‘Salvation’ Summer Suspense Drama Series Produced By Alex Kurtzman

CBS Orders ‘Salvation’ Summer Suspense Drama Series Produced By Alex Kurtzman

CBS has set its next straight-to-series summer drama, giving a 13-episode order to suspense thriller Salvation, from Alex Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout and CBS Television Studios. The series will premiere in summer 2017, joining returning Zoo. CBS earlier this week opted not to renew the two new dramas it introduced this past summer, BrainDead and American Gothic.

Like the other summer dramas under CBS/CBS TV Studios’ model for lower license fees offset by international sales and short-window streaming deals, Salvation is a serialized series with thriller elements. CBS has a three-year deal with Amazon for one new summer drama each year. I hear Salvation has not been set as the 2017 Amazon entry. There is interest from multiple streaming platforms, and a partner will be announced shortly. So far, all CBS summer series have gone with Amazon with the exception of Zoo, which has a deal with Netflix.

Salvation centers on an MIT grad student and a tech superstar who bring a low-level Pentagon official a staggering discovery – that an asteroid is just six months away from colliding with Earth.

“Salvation is the type of fast-paced, dramatic ride that viewers look for in a summer event series,” said CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller. “We’re excited to launch another high concept, highly promotable show with great auspices that adds to our roster of year-round, original scripted programming.”

Salvation was written by Necessary Roughness creators/executive producers Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro based on the story by Matt Wheeler. Kruger and Shapiro have experience with CBS summer dramas, having served as showrunners on the second season of Extant. The duo, who is under an overall deal at CBS Studios, will also be showrunners on Salavation.

Salvation was originally developed at CBS during the 2013-14 development season, with Wheeler as writer and Alex Kurtzman, Bob Orci, Peter Lenkov and Heather Kadin executive producing. It was the first sale for Kurtzman and Orci’s K/O Paper Products after the company moved to CBS TV Studios.

The newly picked up version of Salvation hails from K/O successor, Kurtzman’s CBS TV Studios-based Secret Hideout. The company’s Kurtzman and Hadin executive produce with Hawaii Five-0 and MacGyver showrunner Lenkov as well as Kruger and Shapiro.

The series will be distributed domestically by CBS Television Distribution and worldwide by CBS Studios International.

Daniel Sunjata To Star In ABC’s 'Notorious' Drama Pilot Based On Mark Geragos

Daniel Sunjata To Star In ABC’s 'Notorious' Drama Pilot Based On Mark Geragos

Graceland and Rescue Me alum Daniel Sunjata is set as the lead in ABC’s drama pilot Notorious.

The project, from Sony Pictures TV and Jeff Kwatinetz’s The Firm, was inspired by the relationship between famed criminal defense attorney Mark Geragos and long-time Larry King Live executive producer Wendy Walker. Written by Drop Dead Diva creator Josh Berman and blogger Allie Hagan (Suri’s Burn Book), Notorious is described as a provocative look at the interplay of criminal law and the media. It follows the professional and personal relationship between a charismatic attorney (Sunjata) and a powerhouse television producer as they attempt to control the media, the justice system, and ultimately – each other.

Sunjata will play the character inspired by Geragos, Jake Gregorian, a charismatic and sexy defense attorney, who manipulates the media to win cases at any cost. Following the end of Graceland, the actor had been pursued for multiple pilots, choosing Notorious, from Rescue Me producer Sony TV.

Notorious is executive produced by Berman, Geragos, The Firm’s Jeff Kwatinetz and Josh Barry, alongside Kenny Meiselas and Wendy Walker.

Sunjata also recurred on Smash and Grey’s Anatomy. He is repped by UTA, Cornerstone, Authentic and attorney Ira Schreck

Catherine Hardwicke Set To Direct USA Series 'Eyewitness', Tyler Young To Star

Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) is set to direct and executive produce the first two episodes of USA Network’s 10-episode straight-to-series drama Eyewitness. Tyler Young has been cast as one of the two young leads in the project, an adaptation of the Norwegian crime thriller Øyevitne. Additionally, Scott Peters (V) has joined as an executive producer and will direct multiple episodes of the Universal Cable Prods. series, from Shades Of Blue creator Adi Hasak, who wrote it and will serve as executive producer/showrunner. The original series’ creator Jarl Emsell Larsen will executive produce.

Eyewitness, in the popular Nordic noir genre, explores a grisly crime from the point of view of the eyewitnesses. In it, two innocent teenage boys secretly meet up in the forest where they bear witness to a shooting and barely escape with their lives. Desperate to keep their relationship a secret and in fear of being found by the perpetrator, they remain silent but soon learn that what has been seen cannot be unseen and when you witness a horrible event it changes everything, forever.

Young will play one of the two teenagers, Philip O’Brien. A sensitive yet tough boy from the projects who’s seen more pain than anyone ever should, he gets a shot to start over with his foster mother, Helen, in an idyllic small town. There, Philip’s on the verge of falling in love with a boy from school, Lukas, when they witness a quadruple murder.

The series will begin production in Canada later this year and is set to premiere in 2016 on USA.

She most recently directed Miss You Already, starring Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette, which premiered at the 2015 Toronto Film Festival. Her TV credits include Hell On Wheels, Low Winter Sun, and the pilot of Reckless. She is repped by CAA and Manage-ment.

Peters, who most recently directed USA’s freshman drama Colony, is repped by Rothman Brecher, Andrea Simon Entertainment and attorney Neil Meyer.

Young, who has appeared on Empire and Chicago Fire, is repped by Authentic Talent Management and Gray Talent Group.
